Summer Term

Dear Parents
Welcome back to a new half term and I trust you had an enjoyable Easter break.

This half term we will be embracing the theme of the Ancient Egyptians.

Amongst the activities involved in this unit will be historical research of this culture of the past- exploring gods, pyramids and of course mummies; we will carry out a geographical river study in order to make links to the Nile and we will look at some of the mysteries of the ancient culture.

In Art, we will be using clay to create our own canopic jars, and looking at naïve art styles in order to adopt these painting skills to represent Egyptian art.

As well as Egyptian work, this term we will receive external coaching in cricket and tennis and, on Monday afternoons, Years 5 & 6 will make their way to the University Sports Park to use their excellent facilities for these sports.

In our RE, we will be continuing with our studies of Buddhism which, like our Sikhism work, has captured the imagination of the children and there are lots of elements for them to explore. In PSHCE, we will be looking at relationships and building upon the previous unit of feeling good about themselves.

In Science, as with Literacy and Maths, the children will be revising key areas of the Primary Curriculum.

In Literacy and Maths we will be covering areas that the children need to revise or re-visit ahead of their SATs and therefore the plans will be fairly fluid this half term. We will continue to look at some past papers in order to prepare the children for the tests but we will be emphasising that they can only do their best and try to avoid putting them under any great strain.

I would like to congratulate the children that took the time to look through and have a real go at their workbooks and web links over Easter- well done, this will really help you! It's really nice to see them take some responsibility for their own learning. We will use these booklets and the work they've attempted to help clear up any misconceptions so, if you feel that your child has struggled with something then please encourage them to tell me or let me know yourself.

Please encourage them to have a look through any pages of their workbooks that they have yet to complete. I provided a SATs timetable (they begin May 13th) before Easter but if that has been misplaced, or you would like further information, then please let me know.

Please remember that we have our residential trip the week we get back after half term: Year 6 will be leaving on Wednesday 5th for 2 nights, but we should be having a brief activity session with the children and instructors before half term. I will keep you informed and reminded.

As usual, a little reminder about PE Kits, they must be in and clean each week. As some of the children are maturing please be aware that they are allowed non-aerosol deodorants, but we have been emphasising the need for them to maintain their personal hygiene, and they should not see these as a substitute for this. They should strive to shower or bathe daily.

Homework will be set on a Wednesday and will be due in the following week; usually this will be maths and literacy but as always we will try to include topic-related activities too. Please encourage the children to do their homework sooner rather than later so that if they have any problems we can look at them in advance of deadlines.

As always, if you have any concerns or queries, or would like to offer to help in class, especially with our art project, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks

Mr McLeod and Miss Rowden
